St. Cecilia

St. Cecilia

St. Cecilia is one of the most well known Roman martyrs. Many of the details of her story are not founded on historical fact. Although her marriage, and martyrdom have historical foundation.

According to legend, Cecilia was forced into marriage by her parents despite her vow to remain a virgin. During her wedding, she sang to the Lord in her heart and sat apart from the rest. When the time came for her and her husband to consummate their marriage, Cecilia told him she was being watched over by an angel of the Lord and if he respected her virginity he would find favor in the Lord. Valerian, her husband, asked to see the angel, Cecilia told him where to go to be baptized. There he would see the angel standing by Cecilia, crowning her with roses and lilies.

During her martyrdom, Cecilia was struck three times on the neck, but lived for three days. During that time, she asked the pope to make a church of her home.

In 1599 her body was found incorrupt. Appearing to be asleep.

St. Cecilia is the patron of musicians.
